My son Jacob was a little under the weather this week and spent a couple days at home sharing his unique insight into how the world works. On Tuesday afternoon Julie and I had some errands to run so he had to come with us. As we were driving I heard him call from his seat , “Daddy, does everyone smile on the inside?”.
I paused reflectively and wondered, ‘How do I answer this fairly?’ I would love for my dear seven year old boy to believe that everyone indeed was happy and the world was a great place to live but ‘the rain falls on the just and the unjust’ and we all must weather storms at one time or another.
“No son, not everyone smiles on the inside. There are some people who have suffered and sometimes…”
“No Daddy, I mean their skulls. If you take the skin off is everyone smiling on the inside?”
…So there you have it; Sunshine or rain, in joy or in pain, everyone smiles on the inside.
“ This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118: 24
