Know Your Role

judgeIn church this week we talked about ‘Famous Neighbours’ – verses that get largely ignored because they are directly before or after frequently quoted verses. My favourite:

… For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but to save the world through him.

John 3: 17

The remarkable point that was highlighted from this verse is this: If God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world what would ever make me think that he sent me to condemn it? Surely Jesus was more qualified to judge. Don’t be mistaken, Jesus will one day judge and that day will be the ruin of many, but he came first to seek and save the lost and I am one of those he found. My role is to love those who are lost not because I pity them but because I am one of them. I am one whom Jesus loved and I am sent to reach others that he loves.

It reminds me of a song the Praise Team at Tintern is learning:

Beneath the cross of Jesus, His family is my own.
Once strangers chasing selfish dreams; Now, one through grace alone.
How could I now dishonour the ones that You have loved?
Beneath the Cross of Jesus, see the children called by God.

Beneath the Cross of Jesus by Keith and Kristen Getty (2006)
