So long as man remains free, he strives for nothing so incessantly and painfully as to find someone to worship -Dostoyevsky
You were made for worship. We fulfill our purpose in life when we are worshiping. It’s not a question of if we will worship, but what, or who we will worship. In our Acts class last night we read Stephen’s sermon to the Jewish rulers. In it he says,
…our fathers refused to obey him [Moses]. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt. They told Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who led us out of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’ That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and held a celebration in honor of what their hands had made.
They turned their hearts back to Egypt, the house of slavery they had just been freed from and the way that they did that was by worshiping what their hands had made. They became the object of their own worship.
Wonder is the basis of worship, and worship is the transcendency of wonder. -Thomas Carlyle
Worship isn’t a time and isn’t limited to the morning of any one day of the week. In the same way that God owns everything, every day is the Lord’s Day.
As worship begins in holy expectancy, it ends in holy obedience. -Richard Foster
As long as worship is a thing, you are worshiping yourself. Your personal preferences; your understanding; your ‘god in a box’. If worship doesn’t lead us to obedience we are worshiping ourselves and not God.
God is most glorified in you when you are most satisfied in Him -John Piper
