The Gospel in Action

A remarkable thing happened this weekend in Egypt. Just last week religious extremists affiliated with al-Qaeda targeted Coptic Christian New Year’s celebrations by bombing churches, killing 21 people and injuring hundreds more.

Egyptians of every religious affiliation condemned the act and today, on Christmas Day in the Orthodox calendar, Muslims turned up in droves to act as human shields for Christians who were attending Christmas mass.

The two sons of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, movie stars Adel Imam and Yousra, popular preacher Amr Khaled, all attended Christian services in an attempt to keep extremists from bombing churches again, on the busiest day of the Orthodox calendar.

A powerful demonstration that love looks like courage, compassion, consideration, all rolled into one. Hate seeks to de-stablize, and destroy while love encourages dialogue. Love doesn’t solve all the problems by just showing up, but it seeks out conversation and values opinions, even contrary ones.
